Playing off Michigan’s identity as “The Mitten,” it aims to showcase the fresh, sharp humor that the state has to offer. Hello and welcome to the inaugural issue of *Mitten Wit*! I’m Connor Barnes, your humble editor and the mastermind (or maybe just the mildly caffeinated operator) behind this new venture. If you’ve ever driven past cornfields on your way to a comedy show in Michigan, this magazine is for you. If you’ve ever performed in front of a crowd of ten at a dive bar where the drinks are stronger than the laughter—this is *definitely* for you.
*Mitten Wit* is here to showcase the weird, wonderful, and hilariously unhinged world of comedy in Michigan. We’ll cover everything from stand-up in small towns to improv in the big city, along with the up-and-coming talent that’s turning our mitten-shaped state into a comedy hotspot. We’ve got interviews, show recaps, behind-the-scenes stories, and maybe even a few jokes that will make you snort-laugh in the break room (we take no responsibility for coffee stains on your shirt).
This magazine is more than just a collection of punchlines and quips. It’s a celebration of the people who make Michigan’s comedy scene thrive—from the veterans who’ve been telling jokes since cassette tapes were a thing, to the newcomers hustling their way through open mics, and everyone in between. Whether you’re a comedian, a fan, or someone who just wandered in because you mistyped “Mitten Kit” into your browser, we’re glad to have you here.
*Mitten Wit* is a passion project, born out of a deep love for the art of making people laugh (and maybe just a little bit of desperation to stop explaining to out-of-staters why Michigan is more than just Detroit and Yoopers). So grab a drink, settle in, and enjoy the first issue. I promise it’s more fun than scrolling through Instagram, and at least half as funny as your uncle at Thanksgiving—on a good year.
